PHOENIX - In an expansive 42-minute news conference marking his election to baseballs Hall of Fame, Randy Johnson mixed humour, memories and humility in recalling a career he called a great ride. Dean Lowry Super Bowl Jersey .I never joined a fraternity in college, he said. Now Im amongst one of the coolest.Johnson has spent the five years since he retired mostly away from the game — travelling the world, engaging his love of photography and making a series of USO tours.I knew that I needed that time to kind of unwind, Johnson said. I was wound pretty tight for 22 years, especially probably the last 15, when I really came into my own in this game. His most successful years came with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he won four consecutive Cy Young Awards — he had a total of five — and his only World Series championship. He struck out 20 in nine innings once, and at age 40 pitched a perfect game. The Diamondbacks announced Tuesday that Johnson had been named special assistant to President Derrick Hall.Hall said that the left-handers No. 51 would be retired soon.Johnsons first-ballot selection to the Hall of Fame after a 22-year career was a foregone conclusion.Still, he said, when he got the call on Tuesday he got goose bumps and felt like Ive never felt before in my life.He called his 87-year-old mother to tell her, and she reminded him that at age 7, he had left Little League tryouts frustrated and came home, then she brought him back and made sure he got registered to play.Johnson recalled that as a youngster growing up in Livermore, California, he would throw tennis balls at a taped strike zone on his garage door. And I was Vida Blue with those tennis balls, he said.I didnt envision any of this and Im sorry I couldnt share more of what I was really about when I was playing, Johnson said. But I guess it was more about how my dad raised me and taught me to not ever be content with what youre doing because theres always somebody better than you doing it.Johnson spoke of trying to harness some control in his pitching early in his career.I was a really bad pitcher growing up, he said. Being almost 7 feet tall, 6-10, youre not meant to be a pitcher. My limbs are too long and the biggest thing in being a pitcher is you need to have a consistent release point. Well its pretty hard when youre all arms and legs. So that took me a long time to overcome.Johnson said the issue of what cap he would wear on his Hall of Fame plaque was out of his control. He said he expected the subject to come up when he meets with Hall of Fame officials later this week. And while he said there was something special about all six of his major league teams, his years with the Diamondbacks were career-changing.Current Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick said his best memory of Johnson was in Game 7 of the 2001 World Series against the New York Yankees, when after pitching the previous day, the Big Unit came out of the bullpen to thunderous cheers to get the final four outs as Arizona rallied for a 3-2 victory. It was astounding, Kendrick said.Johnson said hed trade four Cy Young awards for a couple more World Series chances. To be dogpiling on the pitchers mound, and be celebrating, and be riding down the street with your family on a fire truck, I mean, who doesnt dream about that? he said. Thats pretty cool stuff. Thats what you play for and I got to do that. When he runs into fans, they always talk about that World Series, Johnson said. Hoyer passed for a season-high 300 yards on 21-of-34 efficiency for Cleveland (5-3), which entered November above .500 for the first time since 2007. Terrance West and Taylor Gabriel each had a touchdown grab. Hoyer, who beat out first-round draft pick Johnny Manziel for the starting quarterback position during training camp, improved to 8-3 as a starter with Cleveland. Mike Glennon went 17-for-33 for 260 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Bucs (1-7), who have lost four straight games. Three of those losses came by six points or less. Mike Evans racked up seven catches for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Bobby Rainey gained 121 yards from scrimmage in defeat. Trailing 17-16, Clevelands special teams came up with a huge play early in the fourth quarter. Craig Robertson flew in to get a fingertip on Michael Koenens punt. KWaun Williams pounced on the short kick at the 35, setting Hoyer and the offense up with terrific field position. They took advantage. Two plays into the drive, Gabriel put a double move on Alterraun Verner and Hoyer hit him in stride for a 34-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, and the lead was five. After punts both ways, Glennon got the ball back with 2:37 to play and 77 yards to go. The drive started well, with Evans making consecutive catches for 31 and nine yards. After the two-minute warning, Glennon misfired twice to set up 4th-and-1. Evans then caught a pass for nine yards and a first down, but was flagged for offensive pass interference. Glennon then dropped back on 4th-and-11 and looked for rookie tight end Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, but the ball was thrown too far out in front and fell incomplete. The Browns were able to run out the remaining 1:39. Earlier, Hoyer connected with Andrew Hawkins for 20 yards early in Clevelands first drive, then fired a strike to Travis Benjamin for 31 yards on 3rd- and--17. Josh Jackson Super Bowl Jersey. Late in the first, Glennon looked deep to Evans, but Joe Haden deflected the pass and Donte Whitner picked it off. Whitner saw plenty of green in front of him and picked up blocking downfield, returning the interception 54 yards to the Tampa Bay 21. Hoyer threw across his body on the first play of Clevelands drive to a wide open Ben Tate, who caught it while falling out-of-bounds at the five. Tate was then stood up twice on goal-line runs and Hoyer was sacked on third down, as the Browns had to settle for another Cundiff field goal. Rainey keyed an 8-play, 80-yard drive afterward, as the Bucs finally entered the scoring column. He gained 44 yards on five carries, and Glennon found Evans for a 24-yard touchdown to put the Buccaneers in front. Murray hit from 40 yards away late in the half to extend the lead, and Cundiff beat the halftime buzzer with a 43-yard kick, as the Browns went to the break down 10-9. Cleveland burned nearly six minutes off the clock on the first series out of halftime, with West hauling in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Hoyer to cap the 11-play trek. Evans second touchdown catch restored Tampas lead. After Spencer Lanning punted out of his own end zone to give the Bucs possession at the Cleveland 45, Glennon found Vincent Jackson for 15 yards to move the sticks.
